Westrafo to Establish First US Transformer Plant in Ohio

New Facility to Boost US Transformer Supply

Italy-based Westrafo is set to build its first US transformer manufacturing plant in Ohio, targeting an annual output of 12 gigawatts starting in 2027. This new facility aims to address the growing demand for transformers in the US, driven by rising electricity consumption, the need to replace aging infrastructure, and increasing investments in renewable energy.

Expanding Global Footprint

Westrafo has been exporting products to the US since 2019, with over seven gigawatts of installed capacity across the country. The company operates production facilities near its Vicenza, Italy, headquarters and in Tema, Ghana. In July, Westrafo expanded its global presence by establishing Westrafo America, a North American subsidiary, to enhance local customer support during the sales and after-sales phases.

Addressing Industry Challenges

The transformer industry faces a shortage of skilled labor and critical materials, leading to manufacturing delays. However, Westrafo’s new Ohio plant is part of a broader effort to mitigate these challenges. The project, contingent on state and local incentives, received a 1.778%, 10-year job creation tax credit from the Ohio Tax Credit Authority. Ohio is emerging as a leader in renewable energy manufacturing, ranking among the top 10 states for clean energy investments.

In addition to Westrafo, Germany-based Siemens Energy is also building a large power transformer manufacturing facility in North Carolina, set to begin production in 2026. This collective effort underscores the significant investment in the US transformer market to meet growing energy demands and support infrastructural development initiatives.
