U.S. Department of Energy Commits $63 Million to Bolster Battery Recycling and Smart Manufacturing

$41 Million Dedicated to Nationwide Battery Recycling Initiatives

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a substantial $63 million investment aimed at enhancing battery recycling and smart manufacturing across the nation. The initiative is set to assist state and local governments in expanding battery recycling efforts while empowering small- and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies. This program will be managed by the DOE’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC).

$22 Million to Support Small Manufacturers in Smart Manufacturing

Out of the total funding, $41 million will be allocated towards establishing new recycling programs and battery collection points throughout the United States. The remaining $22 million will be directed towards helping SMMs improve their manufacturing processes. This will be achieved through a combination of technical assistance, training, facility assessments, apprenticeships, and direct financial support.

Statements from the U.S. Energy Secretary

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm commented on the initiative, stating, “America’s revolutionary clean energy future requires a modernized manufacturing sector, and the Biden-Harris Administration is helping us get there. The funding announced today will equip small- and medium-sized manufacturers with cutting-edge technologies to improve operations efficiency and expand battery recycling, removing barriers to advancement and bolstering the nation’s competitive standing.”
