Stellantis Embarks on a $400 Million Electrification Journey in Michigan

Electrifying Michigan’s Auto Landscape

Stellantis has committed over $406 million to upgrade three Michigan facilities, marking a significant leap in its electrification strategy. The Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP) is set to be a pioneer in the company’s U.S. operations, as it gears up to produce Stellantis’ inaugural fully electric vehicle, the Ram 1500 REV.

Scheduled for a late 2024 release, the Ram 1500 REV, along with the innovative 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger, will be assembled alongside traditional internal combustion engine models. This move not only diversifies the plant’s production capabilities but also strengthens Stellantis’ foothold in the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market.

Expanding Capabilities Across the Board

Further investments will enhance the Warren Truck Assembly Plant and the Dundee Engine Plant. The former is set to house the production of an electrified Jeep Wagoneer, while the latter will focus on key components like battery trays and beam machining essential for the STLA Frame and STLA Large batteries. This comprehensive strategy underscores Stellantis’ commitment to a robust multi-energy future.

The newly introduced STLA Frame architecture, tailored for full-size EVs, features a high-strength steel frame that is lightweight yet durable, optimizing battery integration without compromising safety. The Ram 1500 REV boasts an impressive range of up to 500 miles with the larger 229 kWh battery option.

Revolutionizing Energy with the Ramcharger

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is set to redefine power with its 663 horsepower and a range that eliminates the dependency on public charging stations. Equipped with a 92kWh battery and an onboard 130kW generator, this vehicle supports both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home bi-directional charging, enhancing its utility and flexibility.

A Strategic Vision for a Sustainable Future

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares praised the rapid transformation at the Sterling Heights Assembly, highlighting the significant role these upgrades play in aligning with Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategy. This ambitious plan involves investing over 50 billion euros in electrification by 2030, aiming for a 100% passenger car battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales mix in Europe and 50% in the U.S.

By securing around 400 GWh of battery capacity and advancing towards a carbon net zero goal by 2038, Stellantis is not just adapting to an electrified era but is actively shaping the future of mobility.
